Today, the 29th July 2013, is part of "Fiestas Patrias" in Peru, the annual festival celebrating Peru's independence from Spain in 1821.

Over two days of annual national holidays, from the 28th to the 29th July, Peru celebrates its independence with street parades, parties, special dinners and celebratory events in honour of this special day.

Although Fiestas Patrias occurs over the two days, the 29th of July is a special national holiday in honour of members of Peru's Armed Forces and the National Police, so we thought we'd do our bit to honour this special day with some photos we took during one of our research trips to Cusco.

For anyone travelling to Peru at this time of year, we highly recommend checking out one of the famous street parades and not to miss the opportunity to join in one of Peru's most important national holidays. Lima is the best place to be involved and to witness thousands of members of the Armed Forces and Police marching through the city.
