Holiday Itinerary

Today is the first day of your Galapagos cruise holiday, and your first destination is the historic city of Quito. Arrive in Quito at any time and we will be waiting for you at Quito airport to escort you to your hotel. The remainder of the day will be free time for you to relax following your flight.

Meals: None

Overnight: Central hotel in Quito

Today you will enjoy a free day in Quito to provide you with some time to adjust to the altitude and so you can make the most of your time in this incredible city and spend time exploring the ancient UNESCO World Heritage City Centre on your own. Quito's old-town centre is steeped in history, and exploring this place on foot is highly recommended as you stroll along cobbled streets, past quaint market stalls and historic churches and colonial architecture. Although the city is packed with interesting places to visit a highlight has to be the Compañia de Jesús (Church of the Society of Jesus) which has a beautiful interior covered in gold leaf paint. If you wish to venture further away from Quito today then ask us about our tours to nearby Cotopaxi volcano and Otavalo market.

This morning we will collect you from your hotel and escort you to Quito airport for a flight to the Galapagos Islands. On arrival in the Galapagos you will meet your cruise guide and the other cruise guests in the airport and will immediately start your cruise through these iconic islands. The first excursion in the Galapagos is a visit to the Galapagos Interpretation Center, a museum and information centre which also has a small hill and look-out over the islands. This is a great introduction to the Galapagos islands explaining about the geology and geography of the islands as well as providing an overview of the human history on the islands, from the time of Darwin to the whalers and pirates that called this place their home. Afterwards you will travel to the harbour and will have time to explore the beautiful beach-front town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, home to sea lions basking on the beach in the front of the town, before travelling by dinghy to your Galapagos cruise yacht to spend your first night on board your Galapagos cruise ship.

Your first full day in the Galapagos Islands involves visits to some of the most beautiful regions in the whole archipelago and is a real treat to introduce you to the fantastic landscapes and wildlife of the Galapagos. First stop is Gardner Bay on Española Island, a picture-postcard beautiful white-sandy beach with clear waters regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The first excursion in this location is a snorkelling trip through the waters surrounding this part of the island wich are rich in a variety of sealife including sharks, sea lions and various types of vivid fish including the Pacific Box fish. Later in the morning you will travel to the bay by dinghy and will make a wet-landing on the white sand to enjoy a walk along the beach which is used by sea lions and marine iguanas as they bask in the sun and relax in these natural surroundings. After lunch you will visit Suarez Point, a haven for birdlife and a wildlife highlight in the Galapagos. Here you will trek along a short trail across the island to spot for the wide variety of birdlife that roosts and nests here, including albatross, frigate birds, Nazca boobies and the famous blue-footed boobies. You may also see further colonies of sea lions and iguanas and can also admire the stunning scenery of the island.

Today begins with a wet-landing at Cormorant Point on Floreana Island (with sea lions waiting on the beach to greet your arrival). After the landing and some time to watch the sea lions you will embark on a short trek across the island to a salt lake to spot the colony of flamingos that live here as well as spotting for other bird species including pelicans. The trek continues a short distance to the far side of the island to yet another picturesque sandy beach where you can spot the bright red Sally lightfoot crabs and marine iguanas. The morning concludes with a dinghy boat tour around Champion Islet travelling into the many small bays which are all fantastic locations to spot wildlife including Galapagos penguins, blue-footed boobies, frigate birds and herons. After lunch on the yacht the afternoon excursions start with a visit to Post Office Bay, one of the more historic locations on the islands. In the 18th century whaling ships set up a wooden barrel to share messages and send letters home (ships would collect and distribute mail for each other) and the idea was so successful the barrel remained and is still used today. Just above the Post Office overlooking the beach is Baroness Lookout which has fabulous views of the bay, and here you will learn about the bizarre stories of the early settlers that tried to colonise Floreana Island. Your day ends with the opportunity to go snorkelling and swimming in the crystal-clear waters off the bay, home to a variety of sealife including penguins and rays.

Santiago Island is one of the volcanically active islands in the Galapagos, and this morning you will make a dry landing at Sullivan Bay to experience this volcanic landscape. Sullivan Bay is a crusty volcanic landscape of undulating solidified lava, and you will trek on a short walk over this landscape to admire the striated rock formations, observe laval tunnels, and learn about the geology of the landscape which contributed to the forming of the Galapagos. At the end of the walk you reach a stunning sandy beach and you can explore the beach to spot for birds as they fish in the waters and crabs as they scuttle across the sand, or it is also possible to snorkel in the clear waters. After lunch on the yacht the afternoon starts with a visit to Pinnacle Rock, the tall pointed rocky landmark frequently seen on many Galapagos postcards. Here you can relax in tranquility on the beach adjacent to the rock or can snorkel in the deeper waters around the base of the rock and spot for fish and sea lions. Later you will climb the path up to the viewpoint at the very peak of Bartolome Island to appreciate the famous postcard view of the island and Pinnacle Bay.

This morning you will travel to the north of Santa Cruz island to visit Black Turtle Cove. Here you will travel among the reefs, mangroves and rocky islets to spot the sea-life that pass through these calm waters as they travel to and from the bay and the open ocean. Sealife you can spot includes rays, reef and hammerhead sharks and sea turtles; and the rocky outcrops and tiny islets are also home to birdlife including blue-footed boobies and herons. Later in the morning the yacht will escort you back to the mainland where you will transfer by bus to the airport at Baltra to take a flight to the city of Guayaquil on the Ecuador mainland. In Guayaquil we will meet you on arrival and will escort you to your hotel for the evening. Guayaquil is a coastal city with a fantastic seafront promenade and is famous for the iguanas that live within the city in the main central plaza.
